Deep Dasgupta anticipates tough competition in Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under
Former Indian wicket-keeper, Deep Dasgupta, has shared his insights on the impending 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and hosts Australia. He predicts a more challenging series than previous ones due to Australia's strengthened team. "Yes (if India will win). But it's going to be a lot closer than the last couple of series," Dasgupta stated during an interview with talkSport Cricket YouTube channel.
Australia's team stronger than before: Dasgupta
Dasgupta highlighted that in the 2018 series, Australia were without key players David Warner and Steve Smith, who were serving their bans. He also noted that during India's last tour, the Australian team was not at its strongest. However, with a revitalized and unified team now in place, he believes Australia will pose a significant challenge this time around.
India's edge lies in experience
Dasgupta believes that India's advantage lies in its experienced players - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, he also emphasized the crucial role of fast bowlers in determining the team's success. "India, I still would say would have the edge with experience and everything," he stated. He expressed concerns over the fitness of star bowlers like Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah who have been plagued by injuries.
Concerns over fitness of Indian bowlers
Dasgupta expressed concerns about the fitness of Indian bowlers, particularly Shami and Bumrah. He stated, "Shami has been injured. He hasn't played any competitive cricket as yet, as we record this. Bumrah, we know he's been off and on with injuries." These concerns could potentially impact India's performance in the upcoming series against Australia.
Australia yet to beat India in a decade
Australia last beat India in a Test series in the 2014/15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (2-0). India avenged the loss with a 2-1 win at home in 2017. The series was embroiled in controversies. India then became the only Asian side with a Test series win in Australia (2018/19). They also won the 2020/21 series Down Under before beating Australia at home (2023).
