Rohit Sharma: Presenting his unique T20 World Cup records
BCCI has announced India's 15-member squad for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, which will get underway on June 1 and will be co-hosted by West Indies and USA. Rohit Sharma will lead the inaugural-edition champions and many eyes will be on him. He is among the most successful batters in the format. Let's decode his unique WC records.
Most capped player in T20 WCs
Rohit is the most capped player in the tournament's history, having featured in 39 games in the past eight editions. In 2022, the Indian skipper steered clear of former Sri Lankan ace Tillakaratne Dilshan, who made 35 appearances. As of now, Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan trails Rohit in this list with 36 T20 WC appearances.
Youngest Indian to make T20 World Cup debut
Rohit made his maiden T20 WC appearance at the age of 20 years and 142 days, the youngest for an Indian to date. He also made his T20I debut in the very tournament. It was India's group-stage clash against England in the 2007 edition where Rohit didn't get to bat. The game is remembered for Yuvraj Singh's six sixes in a Stuart Broad over.
Second-most sixes in the tournament
The dasher's tally of 35 sixes in T20 WCs is the second-most for any batter. He is only behind West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who cleared the fence 63 times in his T20 WC career. England's Jos Buttler trails Rohit in this list with 33 maximums. Meanwhile, Rohit's tally of 963 runs in the tournament is the fourth-most for any batter.
One of the two players with this feat
Alongside Shakib, Rohit is the only player to be a part of all eight previous T20 World Cups. While the Indian ace is officially a part of the ninth edition, Shakib's participation is yet to be confirmed as Bangladesh have not announced their squad. Meanwhile, no other Indian has featured in more than six T20 WC editions.
