Presenting the list of Sri Lanka's Test wins in England
Sri Lanka scripted history after winning only their fourth Test against England on their soil. The win came after a decade, courtesy of Pathum Nissanka's heroics in the second innings. The last time the Lankans had defeated the Three Lions on their soil was way back in 2014. Here we decode Sri Lanka's Test wins in England.
SL win by 10 wickets - The Oval, 1998
Sri Lanka's first Test win against England came in the only Test in 1998. England managed 445 runs in the first innings, John Crawley scored 156*. SL were folded for 591 with Sanath Jayasuriya smashing 213 runs. SL won the match by 10 wickets chasing a target of 36 runs after England were folded for 181 (second innings) courtesy of Muthiah Muralidaran's 9/65.
SL win by 134 runs - Trent Bridge, 2006
SL won their second Test against England on their soil during the third Test in 2006. SL were folded for 231 in the first innings, thanks to Andrew Flintoff's 3/52. In response, ENG were folded for 229, as Muralidaran claimed 3/62. During the second innings, SL recorded 322 and managed to bowl out ENG for 190, winning by 134 runs, courtesy of Muralidaran's 8/70.
SL win by 100 runs - Headingley, 2014
Sri Lanka's third Test win in England came during the second Test in 2014. SL were folded for 257 in the first innings (Liam Plunkett 5/64). ENG managed 365 in their first innings. SL posted 457 in the second innings (Angelo Mathews 160 off 249), setting a target of 350 runs. SL won by 100 runs as ENG were folded for 249 (second innings).
SL win by eight wickets - The Oval, 2024
Nissanka's 127* off 124 in the second innings took SL over the line, scripting a historic win. ENG managed 325 in the first innings with Ollie Pope smashing 154. In reponse SL posted 263. However, Lahiru Kumara's 4/21 helped SL as ENG were folded for 156 in the second innings. SL managed 219 in 40.3 overs, winning by eight wickets.
