Ravichandran Ashwin completes 50 IPL wickets at Chepauk: Stats
Albeit in a losing cause, Rajasthan Royals spinner Ravichandran Ashwin delivered a fine spell against Chennai Super Kings in Match 61 of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). He claimed 2/35 in four overs and during the course became the first bowler to claim 50 IPL scalps at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. Here we look at the key stats.
A fine spell from Ashwin
Ashwin drew the first blood for RR as he dismissed the dangerous-looking Rachin Ravindra for 27. The latter mistimed a big shot as the ball lobed up in the air and Ashwin took a fine catch. The off-spinner dismissed Shivam Dube for 18 on the final ball of his spell. A miscued big shot meant Riyan Parag took a fine catch at long-on.
50 IPL scalps at Chepauk
Ashwin played a lot of home games at the Chepauk during his stay with CSK (2009-15). Playing his 42nd game at the venue, he now owns 50 scalps at 19.62. Ashwin's economy of 6.15 at this ground is the best among bowlers with 35-plus IPL scalps at a venue. Notably, the 37-year-old is still the third-highest wicket-taker for CSK, with 90 wickets at 24.22.
Ashwin joins this elite club
Ashwin is now sixth bowler with 50-plus IPL wickets at a venue in the IPL. He has joined big names like Sunil Narine (70 in Kolkata), Lasith Malinga (68 in Mumbai WS), Amit Mishra (58 in Delhi), Yuzvendra Chahal (52 in Bengaluru), and Jasprit Bumrah (52 in Mumbai WS). Meanwhile, Ashwin has raced to 15 wickets across 12 matches versus CSK (ER: 7.84).
Joint-fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL
Ashwin now owns seven wickets from 11 games in IPL 2024 (ER: 8.69). He has not been among the wickets this season. The off-spinner has snapped up 33 scalps in 41 IPL games at 37.72 for RR in the IPL. With 178 wickets across 208 games, he has joined Narine as the joint-fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history (ER: 7.11).
How did the game pan out?
It was a low-scoring affair as CSK accomplished the 142-run target with 10 balls to spare (145/5). While Simarjeet Singh starred with a three-wicket haul, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad anchored CSK's chase with a well-paced knock. He scored an unbeaten 42. Riyan Parag played a crucial 47*-run knock for RR. No other batter could touch the 30-run mark for the team.
