In a twist of fate, the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy ended in a joint victory for India and Sri Lanka.
While Sri Lanka set a target of 245 in the final in Colombo, India's innings was halted due to heavy rain.
The match was rescheduled for the next day but interrupted by rain again washed out the match.
As the 2025 Champions Trophy is just around the corner, let's revisit India's campaign in the 2002 edition.

Tournament format and venue change
The 2002 Champions Trophy, which was originally scheduled to be held in India, was shifted to Sri Lanka over tax exemption concerns. The tournament's format was also changed from a knockout system in earlier editions in Bangladesh and Kenya, to a league phase.

Close win vs Zimbabwe
Team India was placed in the same group as England and Zimbabwe in the league stage.
India's opener saw Zimbabwe pacer Douglas Hondo tormenting their top-order batters. His four-fer reduced India to 87/5.
However, Mohammed Kaif's brilliant 111*and Rahul Dravid's 71 took India to 288/6.
Despite a 145-run effort from skipper Andy Flower, India won by 14 runs. Zaheer Khan dismissed four batters.
IND vs ENG
Openers power India against England
England were restricted to 267/7 in their league game against India in Colombo . Nick Knight (50) and Ian Blackwell (82) played handy knocks.
India chased down the total without breaking a sweat as both openers Virender Sehwag (126) and Sourav Ganguly (117*) hammered tons.
They added 192 runs as the Men in Blue (271/2) prevailed in just 39.3 overs.

Semifinal showdown and Sehwag's stellar performance
In the semifinals, South Africa gave a tough fight with their lethal pace attack.
But Sehwag's entertaining 59 and valuable contributions from Rahul Dravid (49) and Yuvraj Singh (62) helped India set a challenging 261/9.
In reply, SA were going well at 194/1 before Herschelle Gibbs's retirement at 116 hurt them.
India turned the game around with Sehwag's handy off-spin.
He dismissed three batters in his five-over spell as South Africa lost by 10 runs.
IND vs SL
Two washed-out games against Sri Lanka
India played not one but two finals against Sri Lanka but both got abandoned due to rain in Colombo.
Sanath Jayasuriya's 74 powered the hosts to 244/5 while batting first in the designated final day.
However, rain washed out the game when India were at 14/0.
On the reserved day, the Lankans managed 222/7 in their first innings courtsey Mahela Jayawardene's 77.
Unfortunately, rain did not allow India's chase go beyond 8.4 overs as the trophy was shared.

Sehwag topped the run-scoring charts
With 271 runs at 90.33, Sehwag finished the event as the highest run-getter. Meanwhile, Zaheer was the joint-second-highest wicket-taker with eight wickets at 24.87. Harbhajan Singh was behind him with six scalps.
