Devendra Jhajharia wins second gold for India
India's Devendra Jhajharia won the second gold medal for India at the 2016 Paralympic games. He won gold in the men's javelin throw F46 event, taking India's medal tally to four. Currently ranked third in the world, he bettered his own world record with a throw of 63.97 metres. Devendra had earlier won gold for at the 2004 Athens Paralympics.
USA women clinch all three medals
The women's 1500m T54 event, a race for athletes with spinal injuries was dominated by athletes from the United States of America as they clinched all the three medals. Tatyana McFadden won her fifth Paralympic games gold, completing the race in 3:22.50, a new Paralympic record. Her team mates Amanda McGrory and Chelsea McClammer bagged silver and bronze medals respectively.
The longest tennis match in Paralympic history
It took four hours and 25 minutes for the British duo of Jamie Burdekin and Andy Lapthorne to clinch the bronze medal in the men's wheelchair tennis match. They beat Israel 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in the longest wheelchair tennis match in Paralympic history.
China way ahead of others in medal tally
Chinese athletes continued their dominance at the Paralympic games. China is at the number one position with 63 gold, 51 silver and 33 bronze medals, taking their total to 147 medals. Great Britain is on the second spot with a total of 75 medals, which include 34 gold. Ukraine and USA are on third and fourth spot respectively.
Lack of funds forces athlete to retire at 28
Australia's Evan O'Hanlon won gold medals in the T38 100m and 200m event at the 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games. After winning silver medal at the 2016 Paralympics, he said that he would retire, citing lack of funds as the primary reason.
