Dawid Malan slams his maiden World Cup hundred: Key stats
Extending his sensational run in ODIs, Dawid Malan slammed a brilliant hundred against Bangladesh in Match 7 of the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. The southpaw played with remarkable intent as he scored runs all over the park. He ended up scoring a career-best 140 off 107 balls (16 fours, 5 sixes). This was his sixth ODI hundred and a maiden one in WCs.
A solid knock from Malan
Batting first in Dharamsala, England were off to a flying start as openers Jonny Bairstow and Malan attacked bowlers from the outset. The latter was the aggressor in the partnership as he completed his fifty off just 39 balls. The opening duo added 115 runs before Bairstow departed for 52. Malan added 141 more runs with Joe Root for the second wicket.
Here are his overall numbers
Last month, Malan became the joint-fastest to 1,000 ODI runs for England in terms of innings (21). He equaled former England stars Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott. In 23 ODIs, he has now raced to 1,200 runs at a sensational average of 63.16. As mentioned, this was Malan's sixth ton in ODIs. He also owns five fifties in the format.
Third-highest average in ODIs
Malan's current ODI average of 63.16 is the second-highest among batters with at least 1,000 runs. He is only behind the former Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate (67) and India's batting sensation Shubman Gill (66.10). No other batter has a 60-plus average in this regard. Among England players, Trott (51.25) is the only other player with a 50-plus average in this regard.
Third-highest WC score for England
England posted 364/9 in their 50 overs, their third-highest score in ODI WCs. Their top-two scores came in the preceding edition in 2019. While they posted 397/6 versus Afghanistan in Manchester, they mustered 386/6 against Bangladesh in Cardiff. Notably, a few days ago, South Africa posted the all-time highest team total in ODI WCs, 428/5 versus Sri Lanka in Delhi.
Fastest to six ODI tons
Malan is now the fastest to complete six centuries in ODI cricket, having taken just 23 innings. Pakistan's Imam-ul-Haq was the previous-fastest batter to attain the milestone ( 27 innings). At 36 years and 37 days, he also became the oldest Englishman to get a WC century. He went past Graham Gooch (34 years, 105 days), who scored his last WC century in 1987.
