England batter Dawid Malan retires from international cricket: Key stats
England batter Dawid Malan has announced his retirement from international cricket. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the same on August 28. Malan, who bids adieu seven years after making his international debut, played for the Three Lions in 62 T20Is, 30 ODIs, and 22 Tests. Notably, Malan scored a ton in each of the three formats. Here are the key stats.
Malan credits Eoin Morgan
Malan last played for England in November 2023 during the ICC Cricket World Cup. He hailed his former captain Eoin Morgan for backing him throughout his career. "If things were being written or said, he would openly back me. He'd say to me, 'If there was anything wrong with the way you're playing, I'll be the first one to tell you," said Malan.
Over 1,800 runs in T20Is
Malan made his international debut in a T20I for England against South Africa in June 2017 at Cardiff. The left-handed batter straightaway made a mark by scoring a 44-ball 78. He went on to score 1,892 runs from 62 T20Is at an average of 36.38. His tally includes a ton and 16 half-centuries. Malan struck at a modest 132.49 in the shortest format.
His numbers in ODIs and Tests
Malan also smashed 1,450 and 1,074 runs in ODI and Test cricket, respectively. His only Test ton came at the WACA in Perth. Malan, who scored at a rapid 97.44 in ODIs, recorded six tons.
Malan's notable feats in international cricket
Malan went on to cement his spot in England's T20I side. In 2020, he topped the ICC Men's T20I Rankings. Malan also became the fastest to reach 1,000 runs in T20I cricket, having achieved this in just 24 innings. Malan was also part of England's ICC T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2022. They beat Pakistan to clinch the trophy.
