David Warner handed captaincy for the first time post ban
David Warner might have been barred for life from holding any leadership role in Australian cricket, but the former Australian vice-captain is set to take over as the captain of Winnipeg Hawks for the remainder of the Global T20 Canada. Warner has played 3 games since his return and has scored just six runs in the tournament.
Global T20 Canada is Warner's first major tournament post ban
Winnipeg Hawks have remained unfazed about David Warner's poor campaign. Further, they have appointed him skipper after all-rounder Dwayne Bravo pulled out of the tournament for unknown reasons. The Global T20 Canada is Warner's first outing since the infamous ball-tampering saga. Warner was handed a 12-month ban for orchestrating ball-tampering against South Africa, earlier this year.
Winnipeg's coach Waqar Younis backs Warner
"Warner is a leader. He's a team man. I've seen him in IPL and I've seen him as a leader. He's up there, he's upfront and he likes to give whatever his knowledge is, he's always there." Waqar said.
Warner is one of the most successful captains in T20
Warner is no stranger to leadership. He led Sunrisers Hyderabad to IPL glory in 2016. He was the skipper of the Australian T20 side and the vice-captain in the other two formats of the sport. Warner has led Australia to 8 wins out of the 9 T20Is in which he has captained them. Winnipeg are currently the table-toppers with 2 wins in 3 games.
