Never pick a coach: Ganguly. Another dig at Shastri?
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, recently, said that unlike football, cricket is a captain's game and the coach should take a backseat. Dada also fees that a coach's role should mainly be about man management. He made these comments while promoting his book 'A Century is not Enough' at the Symbiosis College in Pune alongside co-author and senior journalist Gautam Bhattacharya.
Cricket is not like football, says Dada
Ganguly felt a coach should take a back seat and allow the skipper to take the command. "It is not like football. A lot of current cricket coaches think that they are going to run a cricket team like a football team, but cricket is a captain's game and coach has to take a backseat and that is important," said Ganguly.
Dada critical about cricket coaches
Ganguly made these comments when he was asked questions about what's the role of a coach in cricket. The 46-year-old feels cricket coach should only think about man management. However, he added, ""hardly [a] few have it". The former India skipper was critical about coaches and when probed what's the best advice he had ever received, he said, "Never pick a coach."
Dada takes a dig at India coach Shastri
One needs to read Ganguly's comments in context of the current situation of the Indian team. Ganguly isn't in favor of coach Ravi Shastri and once again took a dig at the head coach. When asked what question he would ask Shastri if given a chance, Dada responded, "Who picks up the team, Rohit Sharma (stand-in ODI captain) or Ravi Shastri?"
Shastri, Dada's disliking for each other is well known
Shastri and Dada have had a patchy relation since quite sometime. Recently during India's tour of England, Shastri had stated that the Indian Test team is the best in the last 15-20 years. This saw Dada hit back and say one shouldn't pay heed to Shastri, who keeps making weird claims. Earlier, Shastri had left out Dada in his list of India's best captains.
When did the issues start between the two?
The two personalities fell out when the coach was being selected in 2016. Dada was absent from the interview which Shastri gave to the Cricket Advisory Committee. The committee then selected Anil Kumble as the head coach and gave him a one-year contract. Many former players had come out in support of Dada back in 2016 regarding the feud.
