Commonwealth Games: India lose to Wales 2-3
The Indian women's hockey team squandered several chances and were left to rue wasting those opportunities as they went down 3-2 against Wales in their opening Pool A fixture. Before this fixture, India were being considered as one of the favourites. They had over a dozen penalty corners but failed to convert them as they lost to a side ranked 16 places below them.
India's comeback not enough to secure win
Rani Rampal led India struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half of the game, however, they came back strong in the final 30 minutes to find the back of the net twice. In the 57th minute, Natasha Marke-Jones scored for Wales to inflict India's first defeat against the European nation in a major tournament.
Rampal and Pradhan score for India
Lisa Daley scored the opener for Wales in the 8th minute before Siam French converted a penalty stroke in the 26th minute to double the advantage. Indian skipper Rani Rampal found the back of the net in the 34th minute off a penalty corner and Nikki Pradhan equalized before the end of the third quarter.
India face Malaysia next in a must win fixture
India had as many as 15 penalty corners but could convert just one. They went all guns blazing in the final few minutes of the game, but Welsh goalkeeper Roseanne Thomas stood as firm as a wall to thwart any attempt to find an equalizer. India will now face Malaysia in the next fixture and need a win to stay alive in the tournament.
