Here's why Pietersen wants Kohli to retain Shankar against England
As tournament favorites, India prepare to take on hosts England in the ICC World Cup 2019 on Sunday, there are whispers suggesting that all-rounder Vijay Shankar would be dropped from XI. Shankar has faced criticism from all corners after he failed to perform with the bat. Interestingly, former English cricketer Kevin Pietersen has cheekily urged skipper Virat Kohli to stick with Shankar. Here's why.
Shankar has not performed with the bat
Shankar was included in the XI after opener Shikhar Dhawan got injured, as regular number four KL Rahul was promoted to the opening spot. Shankar has played three matches so far, as he failed to impress with the bat. While he remained unbeaten on 15, batting at number six, against Pakistan, he managed just 29 and 14 runs against Afghanistan and Windies.
India remain unbeaten as Shankar faces criticism
Interestingly, Shankar's performance didn't hamper the campaign as India managed to win all the three matches. In the last two matches, the bowling unit put in a commendable shift to overcome the shortcomings of the batsmen. However, with India entering the crucial phase of the tournament, critics have urged that Shankar should be dropped, as India cannot afford to slip-up, especially in the knock-outs.

Kohli seemingly confirms Shankar won't be dropped
"I personally felt he looked really solid. Sometimes in cricket, you need a bit of luck to get over from 30 to 60. He's very close to that, and we're confident he's going to end up playing that kind of knock for us," said Kohli.
If not Shankar, then who?
Considering that India decide to drop Shankar, the question which would pop up is who can replace him. The ideal answer to this should be Pant, as many players, including Indian legend Kris Srikkanth, have backed him to bat at number four. Meanwhile, Ravindra Jadeja too could be another option, as India could go ahead with an extra spinner.
Do India need to drop Shankar?
While the debate continues as to if India should drop Shankar, the author notes that he produced the goods with the ball against Pakistan. With a win away from sealing a knock-out spot, India should not tinker with the squad. As for his replacement, the author believes that rather than Pant, India should have Jadeja, since the former's inexperience in England could cost India.
