India suffered a setback when all-rounder Vijay Shankar was ruled out of the remainder of ICC World Cup 2019 due to a toe injury. Meanwhile, Shankar's loss became a gain for opener Mayank Agarwal, who was announced his replacement. As he travels to England to play the biggest tournament of his life, his coach R Muralidhar spoke about his World Cup readiness.
Mayank was elated, but nervous as well: Muralidhar
Speaking to Times of India, Muralidhar said that while Mayank sounded elated following his call-up, he was nervous as well. However, Muralidhar has advised him to play the way he does, as he has experience playing for Team India. "He was called up for the Test series against Australia last year and performed really well. I told him to believe in himself," he said.
Muralidhar feels Mayank is a versatile batsman
Muralidhar continued to praise Mayank by saying that he is versatile and had always wanted to represent India across all formats. He further added that Mayank loves to accept challenges. "I know his mindset and the approach he has towards the game. If he gets an opportunity, I am sure he will do well," added Muralidhar.
Muralidhar confident of Mayank playing as an opener
"He will be asked to open. He has been playing as an opener. That is his best position. We have seen the way he has played in Australia. Mayank has the ability to hit boundaries with ease with the new ball," asserted Muralidhar.

Meanwhile, Muralidhar stated that Mayank can bat at any spot, be it as an opener, or at number four. He also said that Mayank has nothing to lose and backed him to give his best in the tournament and live his dream. "I will pray Mayank scores well and returns with the trophy in his hand," he concluded.
Mayank coming off a decent IPL 2019 campaign
Mayank's call to the side certainly came as a surprise, however, it was done in order to bolster the Indian opening order. Moreover, he has had a decent campaign in the IPL 2019, scoring the third most number of runs for Kings XI Punjab, 332 in 13 innings. Scoring at an average of 25.53, including two half-centuries, his talent justifies his inclusion.
