2019 World Cup: Should India be wary of Mohammad Amir?
Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir wasn't even part of the 15-man provisional squad, which was announced ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019. But the left-arm pacer was perhaps destined for a berth as he was recalled back in the final team. In the 2019 World Cup, Amir has been a top performer. Should India be wary of him? Here we decode.
After a barren run of spell, Amir has come alive
Amir had a forgettable stint in ODIs since 2018. In 14 ODIs leading up to the World Cup, Amir picked up just five wickets in 14 games. He never managed more than one wicket in any match. Therefore, his selection in the Pakistan World Cup squad wasn't based on form, but rather faith. However, Amir has repaid the trust in the World Cup 2019
Amir has been excellent in World Cup 2019
Amir is currently the leading wicket-taker in World Cup 2019. He has picked up 10 wickets in three matches at an average of 12.30. The left-arm speedster has bowled with a lot of zeal. He has the best bowling figures (5/30) and a sound economy-rate of 4.73. The tides have changed suddenly in favor of Amir, who has picked up crucial form.
Amir bowled intelligently against Australia
Amir was the best bowler on the field in the crunch encounter between Pakistan and Australia. The 27-year-old conceded just one boundary in his 10-over spell. He drew praise from all corners after figures of 10-2-30-5. What separated him from the rest was that he bowled fuller and strayed away from bowling short. His second and third spells were amazing.
India need to be smart against Amir upfront
Amir will be the one India should watch out for in the marquee clash at Old Trafford. He can ask tough questions to the Indian top order. With his variety and consistency, Amir could trouble someone like Rohit Sharma, who has faced difficulties against left-arm pacers. India need to negotiate his threat like they did against Mitchell Starc & Co. last Sunday.
Pakistan will attack with Amir in the high-octane battle
Sarfaraz Ahmed will be turning up to Amir for decisive spells in the match. Also, the other pacers need to rally around Amir. If Pakistan manage to pick up quick wickets, then Amir will be given the license to attack. He was superb in the ICC Champions Trophy final in 2017 against India and Pakistan will hope he delivers once again.
