2019 World Cup: Jason Roy hopes to return against Australia
England's dashing opening batsman Jason Roy has missed action after facing a hamstring injury in the match against West Indies of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. The swashbuckling batsman was replaced by James Vince against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Roy is now targeting a return for England against Australia on Tuesday. Here's more.
What's been the story for Roy in CWC 19?
Roy got off to a terrific start in World Cup 2019 after scoring a sublime 54 against South Africa. The aggressive batsman missed out against Pakistan (8), but showed his brilliance with a match-winning 153 against Bangladesh. He didn't bat against WI and missed England's next two games including the one against Lanka on Friday. He is a massive player for the Three Lions.
England have three massive games in store
England, who have had a solid World Cup so far, will be in for a tricky phase next. They face the likes of Australia, India and New Zealand in their final three league stage games. Interestingly, all these teams are set to make it to the semi-finals alongside England. It's a moment when England need the best players available and Roy is the focus.
Roy's return being managed game by game
Roy stated his return will be managed game by game. "It's healing pretty well. It's all good news. I'll have a scan in a couple of days to make sure everything is going right. It can't be: 'I'll definitely be back for this game or that game.' It's something that we have to manage day by day," said Roy to Test Match Special.
Roy has been a crucial player for England
In 80 ODIs, Roy has scored 3,153 runs for England. The star batsman has smashed nine centuries with a best of 180. He also has 15 fifties under his belt. Roy has been one of the best ODI batsmen in recent times.
Can England win 2019 World Cup?
England are the hot favorites to clinch the ICC World Cup 2019. They have been ruthless so far and have done everything right with bat and ball. Their bowling in particular has improved drastically by the presence of Jofra Archer. England's batting is another level. Having said that, England will be tested severely by Australia, India and NZ. Things could get real close here.
