FIFA World Cup: Who can qualify for round of 16?
FIFA World Cup 2018 is progressing in a enthralling fashion, where several teams have already booked their spot in the round of 16. Some knock-out spots will be decided in the final group matches. The situation is tense for the countries which are involved in a do-or-die battle. Here we look at all the permutations for qualifying for round of 16.
Teams which have qualified for the knockouts
Six teams have already qualified for the knockouts till now in FIFA World Cup 2018. In group A, Russia and Uruguay went on to win both their matches and are through. The final group game between these two sides will determine which team finishes as table topper. The likes of France, England, Belgium and Croatia have qualified as well.
Group B and C: Teams in contention
In Group B, both Spain and Portugal have 4 points. Portugal face Iran next and need a draw/win to progress. Interestingly, Portugal can qualify with a defeat if Spain lose by a bigger margin and vice versa. In Group C, Australia need to win and hope France defeat Denmark. In this case, the goal-difference would come into picture. A draw is enough for Denmark.
Group D and E: Teams in contention
Argentina need to beat Nigeria in the final Group D game. Jorge Sampaoli's side will need Croatia to defeat Iceland which will enhance their chances. A draw will knock Argentina out of the tournament. In Group E, Brazil and Switzerland are likely teams which will qualify. But if Brazil lose to Serbia, then the latter will go through. A draw for Swiss is enough.
Group F, G and H - Qualification scenario
In Group F, Germany must win by 2+ goals or better Sweden's result to guarantee their spot. If they draw, then they will need Mexico to beat Sweden. If both Germany and Sweden draw, then goal-difference will decide the qualifier. In Group G, England and Belgium have qualified. In Group H, all four teams have played one match each, so we need to wait.
