CPL 2024: Quinton de Kock's blitz helps Royals beat Falcons
Quinton de Kock's boundary-hitting spree led the Barbados Royals to a commanding nine-wicket victory over Antigua & Barbuda Falcons in the fourth match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024. The match was held at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in North Sound, Antigua. Despite clear weather conditions, the Falcons struggled with their batting performance due to tight bowling from the Royals.
Falcons' batting woes and Andrew's counterattack
The Falcons lost two wickets during the Powerplay and two more soon after, leaving them at a precarious 47/4. However, 17-year-old Jewel Andrew, who had previously scored an unbeaten half-century in the Falcons's first match against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, once again shone with a counterattacking 48 off 35 balls. His performance included three fours and two sixes, helping the Falcons post a total of 145/9. Obed McCoy (3/31) was the pick of the Falcons bowlers.
De Kock and Cornwall's powerplay onslaught
In response to the Falcons's total, de Kock and his opening partner Rahkeem Cornwall (34) dominated the powerplay. The duo scored a staggering 76 runs without losing a wicket in the first six overs. De Kock continued his impressive form throughout the innings, displaying a range of audacious shots as he led the Royals toward victory.
De Kock's unbeaten 87 seals victory for Royals
De Kock ended the match in style by hitting Mohammad Amir for a four and a six, finishing unbeaten on 87 off just 45 balls. This led to a resounding victory for the Royals in their first match of the 2024 campaign. The team also displayed excellent fielding skills with several fine catches and tight ground-fielding further restricting the Patriots's scoring opportunities.
Holder's death bowling and spinners clip Falcons's wings
Jason Holder's death bowling was a highlight of the match, as he delivered 12 dot balls in his four overs and claimed two wickets for just 21 runs. Spin bowlers Maheesh Theekshana (2/21) and Dunith Wellalage (1/20) also played crucial roles in limiting the Falcons's scoring. For his outstanding performance, de Kock was awarded the Player of the Match.
