Evin Lewis, the star batter for St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots, has made a significant mark in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024. In a match against Saint Lucia Kings at Warner Park, St. Kitts, Lewis scored an unbeaten 100 off just 54 balls. This was the first century of the ongoing season. Despite his outstanding performance, the Patriots were defeated by five wickets by the Kings in this thrilling encounter.
Lewis's century: A display of power hitting
Lewis's innings was a masterclass in T20 batting, featuring seven fours and nine sixes. His aggressive approach was evident from the start when he scored his half-century in just 24 balls. In the eighth over, he hit three consecutive sixes off Mikkel Govia, further asserting his dominance over the Kings's bowlers. Despite a rain delay in the 19th over, Lewis remained focused and completed his century in the final over of the innings.
Lewis and Mayers set a new CPL record
Despite losing their captain Andre Fletcher early in the game, Lewis found a strong partner in Kyle Mayers, who made 92. The duo scored 54 runs during the powerplay and continued their aggressive play throughout the innings. Their 199-run partnership surpassed the previous record for the highest partnership in CPL history, highlighting their exceptional batting skills. This formidable alliance helped the Patriots set a challenging target of 201 runs. Meanwhile, this was Lewis's second CPL ton.
Saint Lucia Kings's remarkable chase
In response to the Patriots's challenging target, the Kings faced early setbacks with their captain Faf du Plessis and Johnson Charles departing cheaply. However, Tim Seifert and Bhanuka Rajapaksa led a remarkable recovery. Seifert scored a quickfire 64 runs off just 27 balls, while Rajapaksa remained not out at 68 off 35 balls. Their partnership of 103 runs for the fifth wicket proved crucial in reaching the target with 2.4 overs to spare.
