Axar Patel's performance could sideline Rishabh Pant in CT: Manjrekar
What's the story
Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has hinted that Axar Patel's brilliant show in the first ODI against England may well keep Rishabh Pant out of the playing XI.
Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Manjrekar emphasized Patel's all-round abilities and batting temperament.
"Axar is a great option to have because this is a guy...and he has got the temperament of a batter," he said.
Match recap
Patel's performance in 1st ODI against England
In the first ODI against England, Patel was promoted to No.5 during India's run chase.
He answered the call by scoring a crucial 52 runs off 47 balls and stitching a 108-run partnership with Shubman Gill.
The team management's strategic move paid off as India won by four wickets.
Meanwhile, Pant was left out of the playing XI as KL Rahul donned the gloves for the match.
Tournament prospects
Manjrekar's views on Patel's role in Champions Trophy
Further, Manjrekar also suggested Patel could be a great asset for India in the middle order in the upcoming Champions Trophy in Dubai.
He said, "Boy, he looked good against spinners... Axar would be a good option to have in the middle order."
This means Pant's return to the team could be delayed, thanks to Patel's potential as a left-handed batsman who can tackle spin bowling.
Career stats
Pant's ODI performance and future prospects
Pant, who is known for his aggressive batting, has had a mixed white-ball career.
He has played 31 ODIs till now, scoring 871 runs at an average of 33.50 with one century and five half-centuries to his name.
Despite these numbers, Manjrekar believes Patel's recent form could potentially delay Pant's return to the team in the upcoming Champions Trophy tournament.
