Coronavirus outbreak: Real Madrid players to take 10-20% pay cut
Spanish club Real Madrid's players, coaches and the main directors are set to take a pay cut of 10-20% amid the coronavirus pandemic. The deadly virus has claimed over 88,000 lives globally. In Spain alone, more than 14,000 deaths have been reported. Real join a host a clubs, whose players and staff have taken a pay cut.
Real take an initiative to reduce expenses
Real have taken an initiative to reduce expenses for the season. The club issued a statement saying, "Different departments of the club have agreed to voluntarily reduce their remuneration for this year by between 10% and 20%, depending on the circumstances that may affect the closing of the current 2019/20 sports season."
The decision taken by everyone avoids traumatic measures
"This decision, taken by players, coaches and employees, avoids traumatic measures that affect the rest of the workers, as well as contributing to the economic objectives of the entity in view of the decrease in income that it is suffering these months as a result of the suspension of competitions and the paralysis of a large part of its commercial activities," the statement added.
Barca players to help non-staff get full wages
Earlier, Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi revealed that the first team players have taken a 70% wage cut. Messi announced the move in an Instagram post. He insisted Barcelona's players were always open to pay cuts due to the COVID-19 pandemic but had to take time to figure out matters. Besides deduction of their own salaries, the decision was to help non-staff receive full wages.
Serie A giants Juventus also enforced pay cut
Earlier, Juventus announced that they had cut their players' and coach Maurizio Sarri's salaries after all Italian sport was suspended. "The economic and financial effects of the understanding reached are positive for about 90 million euros ($100.5 million) for the 2019/2020 financial year," said a club statement. Earlier, players and directors at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund agreed to take temporary pay cuts.
