Copa America: Argentina look up to Messi, Aguero for resurgence
Argentina have announced their 23-man squad for the upcoming Copa America 2019. Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi leads the show for the South American giants. Further, star striker Sergio Aguero returns to the 23-man squad under Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. Notably, there was no place for Gonzalo Higuain. Argentina start their Copa America campaign against Colombia on June 16. Here are the details.
Argentina placed in Group B
The Copa America 2019 is set to be hosted by Brazil, which begins on June 14. Argentina will play in Group B alongside the likes of Colombia, Paraguay and guests Qatar, which are the FIFA 2022 World Cup hosts and current Asian champions.
Keeping everyone happy is difficult, says Scaloni
There were some notable names missing from the squad announced on Tuesday. Besides Higuain, star striker Mauro Icardi was also left out of the squad. However, Paris Saint-Germain striker Angel Di Maria has been included in the squad. "These are the best players in an important time for the national team. Keeping everyone happy is difficult," said coach Scaloni.
Argentina need inspiration from somewhere
Argentina haven't won the Copa or any other major tournament since 1993. They are expected to face a stern test in Brazil as several top teams are in fray. One would hope to see Messi and Aguero creating the base for this side. Argentina had bowed out in the round of 16 against France in last year's World Cup.
