Copa America: Neymar stripped of captaincy, Dani Alves to lead
After another grueling football season, Latin America will be witnessing an international event in the form of Copa America, being hosted by Brazil. However, the hosts surprised the fans, as their star player Neymar was stripped of the captaincy, ahead of the event. While the reason behind his move is not yet clear, Dani Alves would lead the side instead of Neymar. Here's more.
Neymar was recently banned for his outburst
Neymar has been embroiled in several controversies. Recently, he was banned for three matches for his outburst against a fan post the final of French Cup against Rennes, which Paris Saint-Germain lost. Neymar seemingly punched a fan in the crowd, but later apologized for his ill behavior. He has also been banned by UEFA for three Champions League ties next season for abusing officials.
Neymar has had decent outings with Brazil
While he may have not won the World Cup with Brazil, he has put up a decent show with his national side. Having played 96 games, he has scored 60 goals. Further, he has scored 19 goals in 35 competitive games. The year 2014 saw him at his best, scoring 15 goals in 14 games. Notably, in Copa America, he has just three goals.
Alves to lead Brazil for first time in his career
Alves is one of the senior-most players in the squad, having played for the side in three World Cups to date. Being a defender, he has made a tremendous impact for the side, besides scoring seven goals in the 107 matches to date. Although he does not have relevant captaincy experience, being a veteran he knows the side inside out.
Neymar and Brazil look for success at home
As of now, Brazil are all set to play two friendlies against Qatar and Honduras on June 6 and 10, respectively. It would be followed by Copa America, starting June 14, while Brazil play Bolivia, Venezuela and Peru in the group stage. Having already won the Olympic gold in Rio in 2016, they would be looking for another success at home.
