CONMEBOL wants FIFA to hold World Cup every two years
CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez, recently, requested FIFA that it would be preferable if the World Cup is held every two years. It has been reported that, even earlier, CONMEBOL had proposed the exact same thing to FIFA President Sepp Blatter in 1999, but he rejected the idea. However, CONMEBOL has presented this idea, once again, in front of the football's highest governing body.
Reasons behind the proposal
Dominguez believes that if the World Cup is held every two years, players will regularly get a chance to showcase themselves in front of the whole world. "If we stay with this format, many players could not play more than two. So we see an opportunity there", said the CONMEBOL President. However, the logistics behind holding such a huge event need to be considered.
Dominguez says a global Nations League can also be arranged
Dominguez further argued that a global Nations League can also be arranged for the national teams, across the world. The UEFA Nations League has, most probably, served as an inspiration in this regard. The new tournament has allowed European teams to be engaged in fierce competition rather than playing useless friendly matches.
Dominguez's idea is quite exciting
If global competitions can be increased, it shall surely be a positive sign for the growth of football. Club football is what dominates television, and we miss out on a lot of players just because they do not play for big European teams. However, this worldwide Nations League will put celebrities and unknown figures on the same platform, with football being the sole judge.
