Bayern Munich progress to the FIFA Club World Cup final
Champions League holders Bayern Munich progressed to the FIFA Club World Cup final after beating Al Ahly in Qatar. Robert Lewandowski scored a brace for the Bavarians against the Egyptian outfit. They will now face Mexican side Tigres in the final. Meanwhile, Al Ahly will face Palmeiras of Brazil in the third-place playoff. Here are further details.
Two-star Bayern overcome Al Ahly
Bayern dominated the match from the start and Lewandowski fired them ahead in the 17th minute. He slotted in after Serge Gnabry squared back a Kingsley Coman effort across the face of goal. Bayern kept pressing with Lewandowski and Alphonso Davies missing chances. Al Ahly had more purpose in the second half, but Bayern looked composed. Lewandowski added the second in the 85th minute.
Lewandowski gets to 275 career goals for Bayern Munich
Lewandowski has scored 29 goals in 27 games for Bayern in all competitions this season. The Polish striker has registered a new feat for the Bavarians. He has become only the second player after Gerd Muller (518) to score 275 goals for Bayern in all competitions. Notably, Lewandowski has achieved this tally in 316 matches.
Hansi Flick has his say after Bayern's win
Bayern manager Hansi Flick felt his side ran out well-deserved winners. "We were clearly the better side and although we lost some momentum in the second half, we ran out well-deserved winners," he said. On facing Tigres in the final, Flick said Bayern need to play well. "They're a very dynamic and athletic team and we will have to counter them well," said Flick.
Bayern are favorites to win the competition
After bagging the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2020, Bayern will hope to complete the task by sealing another major honor. The Bundesliga champions have been a step above the rest and will be favorites to win this competition.
