Records held by 'Universe Boss' Chris Gayle
Many expected Chris Gayle to have played his last ODI for West Indies in the recently concluded series against India. However, the 'Universe Boss' changed his mind and stated that he has not yet retired until further notice. Retired or not, Gayle has been a legend of the game across formats. Here we look at the records held by Gayle.
Gayle's massive records in ODIs
Gayle has scored 10,480 runs in ODIs and is the 12th in the list for most runs by batsmen in the format. He is also the highest ODI run-scorer for West Indies. He smashed 25 centuries and 54 fifties in the 50-over format. In 2015, Gayle became the first batsman to hit a double-hundred (215) in a World Cup.
Gayle's other records in ODI cricket
Gayle has the record for the most sixes in ODI cricket (331). He also smashed 1,128 fours and that's the most by a West Indian batsman. He is also among the six batsmen to have registered a double hundred in ODIs. Gayle has the record for the joint-second highest sixes in an ODI match (16). He achieved it against Zimbabwe in 2015.
Gayle amassed the first century in T20Is
The veteran southpaw holds the record of smashing the first century in T20Is. He scored a superb 57-ball 117 against South Africa in the opening match of the first edition of ICC World Twenty20 in 2007. He has amassed 1,627 runs in T20Is that includes two tons and 13 fifties. He also has the second most sixes in T20I history (105).
Gayle scored three triple Test hundreds
Gayle played his last Test match back in 2014. In 103 Tests, he scored 7,214 runs alongside 15 tons and 37 fifties at 42.18. The southpaw is one of only four batsmen to have scored two Test triple hundreds. The other three batsmen in this elite company are Don Bradman, Brian Lara, and Virender Sehwag.
Gayle also boasts of these unique records
He is the only batsman to score a triple hundred in Tests, double hundred in ODIs and a T20I hundred. He is the first player to hit all six balls in an over for four in Tests. He achieved the same against former England pacer Matthew Hoggard. Gayle holds the unique record of smashing the first ball of a Test match for a six.
