'KXIP youngsters want to win IPL for the Universe Boss'
Kings XI Punjab are eyeing their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title and the 12th edition is the one they have their eyes upon. KXIP won their opening encounter against Rajasthan Royals and they will need to build upon this momentum. KXIP have many youngsters and veteran batsman Chris Gayle has stated that the players want to win the title for him.
The IPL title has eluded Gayle despite personal feats
Gayle has played a prominent part in the IPL over the years. He has been a two-time Orange Cap winner. The former RCB batsman holds numerous records and has been a revelation. One thing that has eluded Gayle is the IPL trophy. "Our youngsters have a lot to offer for the team, they want to win the IPL for the Universe Boss," he said.
Gayle played a superb innings against Rajasthan Royals
On Monday, the swashbuckling opener smashed a fluent 47-ball 79. He smashed eight fours and four maximums at a strike-rate of 168.09. With this knock, he became only the second foreigner after David Warner to go past the 4,000-run mark in the IPL (4,073). His efforts helped KXIP post 184/4 and the side then won the match by 14 runs.
'Good to start off the IPL on a positive note'
Gayle was keen to start well and he was satisfied with his performance. "This is a big ground and it is really important to score runs in the first game. I have been in a bit of form in the England series and it's good to start off the IPL on a positive note. What was more important is that we got a win."
Gayle is pivotal for KXIP's chances this season
KXIP will be looking up to Gayle for a promising season ahead. Next up for KXIP are the Kolkata Knight Riders. It will be a massive test for R Ashwin's side at the Eden Gardens. They will hope that Gayle does well on a ground he loves batting. Last season KXIP lost the momentum after a strong start. They cannot afford the same.
