Know about the incident that happened in the 2nd Test
Chandimal was found guilty of ball tampering and on-field umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar accused him of shining the ball using 'unfair' means. Due to this decision by umpires, the Sri Lankan players refused to take the field on Day 3 of the Test. The Lankan officials discussed the whole incident with match referee Javagal Srinath.
Chandimal was handed one match ban
The ICC stated that the player breached the 'Code of Conduct' by changing the condition of the ball by unfair means. Match referee Javagal Srinath handed Chandimal two suspension points, which led to him being suspended from playing the third and final Test against Windies.
Lankan skipper, coach admit to going against spirit of game
Apart from ball-tampering, Chandimal, coach Hathurusinghe and first team manager Gurusinha accepted charges by the ICC for breaching the spirit of the game. These three were charged for their involvement in Lanka's decision in refusing to take the field in the second Test. The ICC had stated that the trio have been charged for breaching Article 2.3.1, which is a Level 3 offence.
What's in store for Chandimal and the management?
Besides missing the Test match, Chandimal will also receive four demerit points. The ICC will hold a hearing on July 10 to hand out the appropriate sanction for the Level 3 charges on trio including Chandimal. Until the hearing, Hathurusinghe and Gurusinha will be able carry on with their professional responsibilities. The hearing on July 10 will be carried out via a video/telephone conference.
