CT: Mohammed Shami scripts numerous records with sixth ODI fifer
What's the story
India's fast bowler Mohammed Shami has created a new record in the world of cricket.
During India's 2025 Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh in Dubai, he became India's leading wicket-taker in 50-over ICC events.
Shami achieved the feat with his five-wicket haul, taking his tally to an incredible 60 wickets.
The game also saw him complete 200 wickets in the format.
Career milestones
Shami's record-breaking journey in cricket
Shami's rise to the top was defined by consistent performances and key contributions.
As per ESPNcricinfo, he bettered Zaheer Khan's record of 59 wickets from 32 innings. And, surprisingly, Shami did it in just his 19th innings at 13.28.
Playing his maiden Champions Trophy match, Shami claimed his fifth fifer in ICC ODI events.
Four of these fifers have come in World Cups. Meanwhile, no other bowler even owns four fifers in ICC ODI events.
World Cup performance
Shami's impressive record in ODI World Cups
As mentioned, Shami has also been phenomenal in ODI World Cups.
He has picked 55 wickets in three editions of the tournament, including a staggering 24 wickets from the 2023 edition alone.
This performance further solidifies his status as one of India's most lethal bowlers in international cricket.
Record hauls
Shami sets new record for 5-wicket hauls
Apart from his wicket-taking abilities, Shami also owns the record for the most five-wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in ODIs.
He took his sixth ODI fifer during the match against Bangladesh.
No other Indian bowler has even four fifers in this format. Only Australia's Mitchell Starc has claimed more fifers (8) since 2013, Shami's debut year in ODIs.
Match impact
Shami's performance restricts Bangladesh in Champions Trophy
Despite losing five wickets for a mere 35 runs, Bangladesh posted a competitive total of 228/10.
The turnaround was largely due to a monumental 154-run partnership between centurion Towhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali.
While Ali was dismissed for 68, Hridoy went on to smash his maiden ODI ton (100).
Shami took two wickets with the new ball before breaking the Hridoy-Ali partnership.
The pacer took two wickets toward the end as well.

Fastest Indian to 200 ODI wickets
Earlier in the game, Shami became the joint-second-fastest bowler to touch the 200-wicket mark in ODIs, after Starc (102 matches).
Shami, who is playing his 104th match, equaled Pakistan's Saqlain Mushtaq's feat.
The pacer finished with 5/53 across 10 overs. He has raced to 202 scalps at 23.63.
Overall, Shami became the eighth Indian to complete 200 wickets in ODI cricket.
