Australia hammer England, register highest successful run-chase in Champions Trophy
What's the story
Australia have scripted history after beating England in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.
The Men in Yellow chased down 352, now the highest successful run-chase in Champions Trophy history. Ton-up Josh Inglis and Alex Carey powered the Aussies after they were down to 136/4.
Earlier, Ben Duckett's record-breaking 165 propelled England to their highest-ever total in the 50-over tournament.
England
England rack up 351/8 in 50 overs
England, who were invited to bat, lost Philip Salt and Jamie Smith in the first powerplay. However, Duckett took England past 200 from 43/2 along with Joe Root.
While Root departed after his fifty, Duckett slammed a ton before making history.
England lost wickets toward the 40-over mark, however, Jofra Archer's 10-ball 21* fueled them in death overs.
Australia's Ben Dwarshuis took three wickets.
Australia
Inglis get Australia home in 47.2 overs
Australia also lost two wickets in the first 10 overs, in the form of Travis Head and Steve Smith.
However, Matthew Short and Marnus Labuschagne added 95 runs, taking Australia past 120.
Adil Rashid broke the crucial partnership before Liam Livingstone dimissed half-centurion Short.
Inglis and Carey formed a match-winning partnership thereafter. The former, along with Glenn Maxwell, helped Australia win in 47.2 overs.
History
Australia complete record run-chase
As mentioned, Australia have registered the highest successful run-chase in Champions Trophy. They went past Sri Lanka, who chased down 322 against India in the 2017 edition, at The Oval.
Meanwhile, Australia's 352 is also the highest successful run-chase in ICC tournaments overall. Pakistan held the previous record, having chased down 345 against Ireland in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup.
Short
Short races to second ODI fifty, 2,000 List A runs
Short set the tone of Australia's run-chase with a whirlwind knock. Although he lost Head and Smith, he continued with his counter-attacking strokes.
Short kept Australia afloat in the first powerplay, adding a constructive partnership with Labuschagne.
The former managed a 66-ball 63 (9 fours and 1 six), completing his second ODI fifty.
Short also raced to 2,000 runs in List A cricket.
Duckett
Third ODI ton for Duckett
Duckett's record-breaking innings bolstered England in the first innings.
Unlike the previous few ODIs, Duckett made a watchful start. He didn't rush while sharing a valuable stand with Root.
Duckett went after the bowlers later on, scoring a 143-ball 165. His knock was laced with 17 fours and 3 sixes. He completed his third century in ODI cricket.
Record
Highest individual score in ICC Champions Trophy
Duckett now has the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history.
He broke the record of New Zealand's Nathan Astle, who slammed a 151-ball 145* against USA at The Oval in 2004.
Duckett earlier went past legends like Graeme Smith (141), Sachin Tendulkar (141), Sourav Ganguly (141*), and Andy Flower (145) in terms of highest individual scores (Champions Trophy).
Information
Australia better England's total
England earlier unlocked a new achievement by recording the highest team total in ICC Champions Trophy history. This bettered New Zealand's record of 347/4, which came against USA way back in 2004 at The Oval. However, Australia's run-chase defied it all.
Root
Root slams first ODI fifty against Australia since 2018
Root played a traditional ODI knock after England lost two quick wickets. He joined forces with Duckett, having firmly held his fort.
Adam Zampa trapped Root in front in the 31st over. He slammed a 78-ball 68 (4 fours).
As per Cricbuzz, Root recorded his first fifty-plus score in 11 ODI innings against Australia (since June 2018). Overall, it was his 41st ODI fifty.
Milestone
Root completes 20,500 runs across formats
With his first run in the match, Root also completed 20,500 runs in international cricket.
Notably, Alastair Cook remains the only other player to have scored over 15,000 runs for England across formats (15,737).
Root has 52 tons, the most for England in international cricket. He has slammed over 12,000 of his international runs in Test cricket.
Battle
Wood dismisses Smith for fourth time in ODIs
Head was the first Australian batter to depart. He was caught and bowled by Jofra Archer.
Wood got rid of Smith in the very next over. The English seamer dismissed Smith with a 150.5 KPH delivery.
Smith has fallen to Wood for the fourth time in ODIs. In 10 innings, the Aussie batter has managed 61 runs off 87 balls at 15.25.
Inglis
Match-winning ton from Inglis
Inglis later formed a match-winning partnership with Carey after Australia were four down.
The former started his innings with a cracking boundary and continued to do so across the match. Some of his audacious strokes came at the death.
Inglis slammed an unbeaten 120 off 86 balls (8 fours and 6 sixes). He hammered the winning six in the 48th over.
Carey
Carey assists Inglis with fine fifty
While Inglis counter-attacked, Carey duly supported him by rotating the strike. He played with easy, especially against spinner Adil Rashid.
Carey completed his 11th half-century at a good scoring rate. However, Brydon Carse ended the Carey-Inglis partnership by removing the left-handed batter.
Carey slammed 69 off 63 balls, a knock laced with 8 fours. He was even dropped on 49.
Century
Joint-fastest century in Champions Trophy
Inglis raced to his century off just 77 balls, now the joint-fastest in Champions Trophy history.
He equaled India's Virender Sehwag, who hammered a 77-ball ton against England in Colombo in 2002. No other player has slammed a ton in less than 80 balls in the tournament.
Inglis, who slammed his maiden ODI ton, has raced to 663 runs. His tally includes three fifties.
Record
Fourth Australian with this feat
Inglis entered another elite list of batters during his knock.
He is now the fourth player with tons in each of the three formats for Australia. He joins Shane Watson, Glenn Maxwell, and David Warner on this list.
Inglis has a solitary century in two Tests, while his T20I career includes two hundreds (29 matches).

Much-awaited win for Australia
The victory against England marks Australia's first in the Champions Trophy since the 2009 edition, which they won. They lost three matches (NR: 3) across the last two editions (2017 and 2013).
