Champions League: Key numbers from Atletico and PSG's quarters progression
The second leg of the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League 2019-20 season saw Atletico Madrid beat holders Liverpool, whereas, Paris Saint-Germain overcame Borussia Dortmund behind closed doors. Both clubs progressed after aggregate scores of 4-2 and 3-1 respectively. There were some staggering numbers in both matches. Here we look at the same.
PSG overcome Dortmund 2-0 at home
PSG overturned a 2-1 deficit to beat Dortmund 2-0 in the second leg clash at home. Neymar gave PSG the lead in the 28th minute as PSG grew in confidence. On the other hand, Juan Bernat turned in Pablo Sarabia's in the additional minute of half-time to take things under control. Dortmund's Emre Can was sent off in the 89th minute.
PSG reach quarters for the sixth time
PSG remain unbeaten in each of their eight home matches against German sides in all European competitions (W7 D1). PSG have reached the UCL quarter-finals for the sixth different season. Neymar has had a direct hand in 14 goals in just eight home UCL appearances for PSG. Defender Marquinhos registered his 50th Champions League start for the French club.
Champions League: Holders Liverpool get knocked out
Defending champions Liverpool went on to exit from the tournament after Spanish side Atletico Madrid went on to seal the tie in extra time. Georginio Wijnaldum scored first for Liverpool to equal the proceedings in the aggregate score. However, as things went to extra time, Roberto Firmino gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead. But then Marcos Llorente and Alvaro Morata scored three goals between them.
Top records scripted in the Liverpool-Atletico tie
The Reds have lost a home European game for the first time under manager Jurgen Klopp. The Premier League leaders have fallen in the last 16 of the UCL for the first time since 2006. Atletico have progressed from five of their previous six UCL knockout ties. Notably, this was the first match in the competition to see four goals scored in extra time.
