A look at Lionel Messi's Champions League records
Lionel Messi was highly inspirational for Spanish champions Barcelona in their 3-1 win against German club Borussia Dortmund in gameweek 5 of the UEFA Champions League. The victory helped Barcelona progress into the round of 16 for the 13th season in a row. Messi, who has continued to thrive at the club, holds many Champions League records. We present the same.
Messi has registered 114 career UCL goals
Messi amassed his 114th career Champions League goal after scoring against Dortmund. He is 13 short of equaling Cristiano Ronaldo's record tally (127). The Argentine now has a goal against 34 different teams in the UCL. That's the highest-ever by any player. He was instrumental in helping Barcelona record their 149th victory in the UCL. This is the second-highest after Real Madrid (158).
Messi finished top goal-scorer in a campaign on six occasions
Messi scored the most UCL goals in 2018-19 season (12). He shared the joint-best tally alongside Neymar and Ronaldo in 2014-15. He was also the top goal-scorer in four successive seasons from 2008-09 to 2011-12. Ronaldo (six successive seasons) holds the record. Messi has scored two goals in the UCL this season from five matches.
Messi's record for Barcelona will be unbreakable
Messi has always been a one-club man and all of his 114 career UCL goals have come for Barcelona. He is the leading goal-scorer for a single club in the competition. Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has the next best tally (106 goals for Real Madrid).
