Champions League, Atletico Madrid oust Manchester United: Records broken
Renan Lodi's only goal helped Atletico Madrid beat Manchester United in the Champions League round of 16 second leg tie at Old Trafford. Lodi's neat header from Antoine Griezmann's cross in the 41st minute. United tested Jan Oblak on a few occasions and the keeper stood tall to keep the visitors in the game. Atletico pocketed the tie 2-1 on aggregate.
Griezmann achieves these feats
As per Opta, Only Koke (11) has provided more assists than Antoine Griezmann (9), who went level with Gabi) for Atletico in the Champions League. This was the Frenchman's first one in a knockout round in the competition for the Spanish side. Atletico Madrid have scored six away goals in the UCL this season, with Griezmann scoring twice and making two assists.
A look at the notable team stats
Man United have now been eliminated in their last four Champions League knockout games when they went on to draw the first leg. Prior to this, Atletico Madrid had lost their last two away trips to England (versus Chelsea in 2020-21 and Liverpool in 2021-22). United have won just two of their last nine Champions League home games against Spanish opponents (D3 L4).
How did the match pan out?
United started well and Anthony Elanga almost put the hosts in front but was denied by Oblak. David de Gea then made an excellent save to stop Rodrigo De Paul's superb strike. Joao Felix's goal was ruled out for offside before Lodi scored the opener. In the second half, Oblak denied Raphael Varane as the visitors held on for a crucial win.
Another poor exit for United
United have reached the quarters just twice in their last eight appearances in the UCL. For the third time, they have been ousted from the round of 16 during this spell.
