UEFA president offers Liverpool new hope of EPL title win
Premier League leaders Liverpool are all but certain to be crowned champions no matter how the 2019-20 campaign is finished, according to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. The coronavirus pandemic has postponed the majority of European football indefinitely, with organizers still hoping to find a way to complete the season. Here are further details regarding the same.
Liverpool enjoy a 25-point lead at the top
Liverpool enjoyed a 25-point lead at the top of the table and were eyeing a first Premier League honor. They required just two wins to also secure their first domestic league title in 30 years. Earlier, the Premier League was suspended on March 13. According to a report in the Independent, some top-flight clubs have argued in favor of voiding the 2019-20 season.
'There is no way Liverpool could end without the title'
Ceferin claimed Liverpool could certainly win the title. "There is no way Liverpool could end without the title. If the matches are played, then they will almost certainly win it - theoretically, they still haven't earned the title but they almost certainly will," Ceferin told Slovenian sports daily Ekipa. "In case the matches cannot be played, we will need to find a way."
UEFA president believes in Liverpool sealing the title
"And, once again, I see no scenario according to which Liverpool would not be the winners. I realise fans might be disappointed if the match is played in an empty stadium or even if it is resolved around a table, but I believe that one way or another they will win the title," he said.
Premier League to restart once conditions are safe
The Premier League said last week that play would only restart once it is "safe and appropriate". At the moment, discussions are ongoing as to how to complete the remaining 92 fixtures. Besides the EPL, Europe's other major domestic leagues have also been suspended.
