Umesh replaces Bumrah in India's Test squad: Details here
The Indian cricket team has been dealt with a big blow ahead of its Test series against South Africa, starting October 2. Premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the Test series with a minor stress fracture in his lower back. He has been replaced by Umesh Yadav. Here's more in the same.
BCCI issues statement, Bumrah to undergo rehab
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement that injury was detected during a 'routine radiological screening'. Bumrah will now undergo rehabilitation at the NCA in Bangalore and will be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team.
Bumrah has been in red-hot form in Test cricket
Bumrah, who is yet to make his Test cricket debut in India, will have to wait for now. He has been the pace spearhead for India in Tests in recent times. Since his debut in 2018, Bumrah claimed 62 wickets in 12 Tests, all away from home. He was in red-hot form against West Indies and claimed 13 wickets in two Tests.
Bumrah was rested in limited-overs cricket post 2019 World Cup
Bumrah was rested from the T20I series against South Africa. The two-match affair ended 1-1. He was also rested from the limited-overs leg of the West Indies tour that followed the ICC World Cup 2019.
A well deserved call-up for Umesh
However, it's a well deserved call-up for Umesh. The right-arm pacer has been a constant feature in home Tests for the last three years. He took 10 wickets in his last Test at home, against West Indies in 2018. However, India have plenty of options in the pecking order above Umesh and that's why the latter's role was limited for a while.
