Mayank, who shared a record-breaking partnership with Rohit Sharma, stood out. Here are the records scripted by him.
Mayank joins an elite list
Mayank stands out with a brilliant display
Mayank smashed 215 against the Proteas. He hit 23 fours and six sixes. The dashing opener batted beautifully to convert his innings into a big one. He shared a 317-run stand with Rohit (176). This was India's best partnership for any wicket against SA in Test cricket. This was the 10th occasion of two Indian openers scoring a century in a same Test innings.
Mayank scripts these two stunning records
Mayank registered the second-best score by an Indian in Test cricket against the Proteas. Virender Sehwag's 319 is still the highest score by an Indian against SA. He also became the fourth Indian to convert a maiden Test hundred into a double century. Dilip Sardesai vs NZ, 1965, Vinod Kambli vs Eng, 1993 and Karun Nair v Eng, 2016 are the other three batsmen.
Mayank registers these feats as well
Mayank became only the second batsman to score a double century in the very first Test innings on Indian soil after Dean Jones (210). The opener also became the 86th Indian to score a Test hundred. He also became the 33rd Indian opener to smash a century. He is only the third Indian in the current set-up to smash a double ton.
Mayank has done well since making his debut for India
Mayank has done well since making his debut against Australia at the MCG. He amassed 76 and 42 in that Test match. The promising batsman then hit 77 in the Sydney Test. Against West Indies recently, he got scores of 5, 16, 55 and 4. What he brings is consistency and the ability to play positively. He has worked hard to get here.
