Scenarios in which Brazil would qualify for the knock-out stage
Brazil left it until the dying moments to scrape past Costa Rica and seal a 2-0 victory. Both goals came in injury-time after Philippe Coutinho and Neymar got on the score-sheet. With this win, Brazil sit on top of Group E as Costa Rica were ousted from the tournament. Here are the scenarios in which Brazil would qualify for the round of 16.
Brazil need to beat Serbia to guarantee progression
Despite Brazil leading the group, as of now, their qualification is not guaranteed. They will face Serbia in the last encounter and a win against them will ensure them 7 points, thereby, securing their promotion. If Brazil draw, they would end with 5 points and a lot will depend on the other results. If Brazil lose, even then, other matches will determine their fate.
What do Brazil need?
Brazil will be hoping that Serbia go on to beat Switzerland. A win for Serbia will mean that the fate of Brazil will be in the hands of their own players. A draw or win against Serbia will see Tite's men through. If Serbia and Switzerland draw, then both Serbia and Brazil will have four points taking progression to the last day.
Swiss army is a serious contender as well
If Switzerland beat Serbia then they will get to four points. Their last game is against Costa Rica and a win will see them progress along with either Brazil or Serbia. If Swiss army draw then they face a must-win scenario against Costa Rica. That will see them end with five points. If Serbia beat Brazil, then Switzerland will progress.
Everything will go till the final group match
Group E is in a tricky situation at the moment. The win against Costa Rica has given Brazil the cushion, but the job isn't finished. Serbia have the best chances and one win from two games is enough for them. If they draw both and Switzerland win against Costa Rica, then all three teams will see goal-difference coming into play.
