These new rules in BPL have never been implemented before
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has come up with a revolutionary change in its principal T20 competition, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). The new rules would see bowlers getting the much-needed preference in the T20 format, as both pacers and spinners would relish this and try their luck in the batsman-dominated game. Here are further details on the rules.
BPL to introduce three new rules for bowling
Following are the new rules to be introduced in the BPL: Every side to have a fast bowler from overseas, who can bowl at a speed of more than 140 kmph, consistently. Also, the teams would have at least one leg-spinner in their side. Furthermore, the wrist spinners in the side would have to complete their entire quota of four overs, during the match.
BCB aims at improving Bangladeshi players in the format
"BCB wants this BPL to be about improving Bangladesh's cricketers in T20s, so we want to make sure that our batsmen and bowlers get enough opportunities, something that was not possible when it was a franchise-based BPL," BCB director Mahbubul Anam told ESPNCricinfo.
BCB introduces other changes in BPL, considering support staff
As far as the other changes in the tournament are concerned, the BCB also decided on having an overseas head coach, along with an overseas physiotherapist and trainer. Also, the local coaches for the side would be acting as an assistant coach to the overseas coach, while the sides would also have a team director in the form of a BCB director.
The players shouldn't be worried about money: Anam
"The players shouldn't be worried about money. We are holding this tournament by keeping them in mind. Salary isn't very important, but it will definitely be respectable," concluded Anam.
A welcome change for BPL and Bangladesh cricket
As far as the new rules for the BPL are concerned, it is indeed subversive, as these rules can certainly help in making Bangladesh cricket grow better. While there are also talks that these changes could be implemented by other T20 leagues as well, the author believes that more than the other leagues, Bangladesh cricket needs it more, as they continue to lag behind.
BPL 2019 to get underway from December 6
The seventh edition of the BPL is all set to get underway from December 6 and would be the first edition to be held entirely under the control of the BCB. Comilla Victorians are the defending champions. Also, to honor the 100th birthday of Bangabandhu in 2020, the tournament has been renamed to Bangabandhu BPL. The matches would be held in Chittagong and Dhaka.
