Why Boxing Federation of India is against newly-formed ad-hoc panel
What's the story
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has voiced its displeasure over the Indian Olympic Association's (IOA) decision to create an ad-hoc panel to run its affairs.
The IOA took this step after BFI failed to hold elections before February 2, 2025.
Now, BFI has termed the move "illegal" and a breach of a National Sports Federation's (NSF) autonomy.
Here are further details.
Constitutional breach
BFI claims IOA's decision violates constitutional provisions
The BFI has conveyed its objections to the IOA in a letter from its president.
The letter mentions that the IOA didn't consult with either the BFI office or its president before taking this decision.
It goes on to argue that according to the Article 21.5 of IOA's constitution, no NSF-related decision can be taken without consultating the parent International Federation and approval from the IOA Executive Committee.
Legal action
BFI to challenge IOA's decision in court
The BFI has been in talks with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) over its elections since February 2, 2025.
Apart from the talks, the federation will also file a petition in the Delhi High Court to overturn this "illegal order" by the IOA.
This comes after a recent ruling by the same court which nullified a similar IOA decision over Bihar Olympic Association.
Defense
IOA President PT Usha defends ad-hoc panel decision
IOA President PT Usha has defended the decision to make an ad-hoc panel. She said the IOA has been overseeing BFI's administrative affairs and observed a lack of stability due to delayed elections.
The newly formed ad-hoc body has Madhukant Pathak as its chairman, BFI Vice-President Rajesh Bhandari as vice-chairman, and members Dr DP Bhatt, boxer Shiva Thapa, and Virendra Singh Thakur.
This panel will manage the BFI and supervise its elections.
Criticism
BFI President Ajay Singh criticizes IOA's decision
Two-term BFI President Ajay Singh slammed the IOA's decision as illegal and violative of due process.
He said no decision on an NSF can be taken without consulting the concerned international federation.
Despite facing flak from 24 state associations for not holding polls and junior national championships for four years, a BFI source claimed they have conducted as many as 51 national and international championships over seven years.
