Finch wants players to make life difficult for Warner, Smith
With Australia set to face India for two T20Is and five ODIs, skipper Aaron Finch has said that it is a big opportunity for the top order to step up and cement their spots. David Warner and Steve Smith are set to return to the fold ahead of the World Cup and Finch wants his players to make life difficult for the two legends.
The current situation of Smith and Warner
Both Warner and Smith are currently nursing elbow injuries, but are expected to be available for selection next month if everything goes well. Earlier, Cricket Australia had handed these two a 12-month ban for their role in the ball-tampering scandal against South Africa last year. Their ban is set to end on March 29 and these two are expected to feature for Australia.
Finch wants players to be on their toes
"Definitely it's a great opportunity for the guys to come in and really challenge for that spot. David (Warner) obviously had some elbow surgery recently so that'll be in the back of the mind as well," said Finch.
Aussies have struggled in the absence of Smith and Warner
Australia have struggled in the absence of Smith and Warner. They endured a poor 2018, losing against India, South Africa, England and Pakistan. The batting has been dismal both in ODIs and Tests. The two cricketers are expected to Australia's trump cards during the ICC World Cup 2019. Prior to the World Cup, they could feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 season.
Players need to make it count against India
Australia have a few spots in the squad that are still up for grabs. The players set to play against India will be wanting to show their mettle. Some strong performances could help these players to be in contention for the coveted tournament. This in turn could give the selectors a headache as far as Smith and Warner are concerned.
Aussie batsmen in focus against India
The likes of D'Arcy Short, Usman Khawaja, Alex Carey and Peter Handscomb are all fighting for places and it is obviously a strong platform for them to make it count. The five-match ODI series will start from March 2 onwards.
