Cricket: Which are the most famous sledging incidents?
Cricket might be called a 'gentleman's game' but still sledging is an integral part of this sport. The Australians are the masters of this 'dark art'. They have, time and again, used it to get into the heads of their opponents. However, a bit of on-field banter livens up the game. Here are some of cricket's famous sledging incidents.
Glenn McGrath and Ramnaresh Sarwan
In the fourth Test of the 2003 series in Antigua, Ramnaresh Sarwan was in full swing and was steering West Indies to a comfortable run chase. Things took an ugly turn when McGrath began the banter and asked the 21-year-old, "What does Brian Lara's d**k taste like?". Sarwan calmly responded, "Why don't you ask your wife?"
Venkatesh Prasad and Aamer Sohail
In the 1996 World Cup, Pakistan openers Aamer Sohail and Saeed Anwar were smashing the Indian bowlers all over the park. Venkatesh Prasad was hit for a couple of boundaries and things started to heat up. Sohail mocked Prasad by gesturing that he should fetch the ball. On the very next delivery, Prasad rattled his stumps and showed him the way to the pavilion.
Merv Hughes and Javed Miandad
While batting in the second Test at Adelaide, Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad had a few words with Australian pacer Merv Hughes. Miandad mocked Hughes by calling him a 'fat bus conductor'. However, it was Hughes who had the last laugh after dismissing Miandad. He couldn't hold himself back and took a jibe at the batsman saying 'Tickets please!'
Ian Botham and Rod Marsh
Ian Botham had walked into the crease when Australian wicket-keeper Rod Marsh decided to get a little nasty. Marsh got personal and asked Botham "How's your wife and my two kids?". Botham remained unfazed by the comment. He kept his cool and responded: "The wife's fine, the kids are retarded though".
