England and India lock horns in the match number 38 of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 on Sunday. One expects Edgbaston to host a fierce battle. England are in a must-win scenario and need to bounce back. The two sides have been embroiled in some classic ODI encounters in the past. Here we look at the five best ODIs.
2011 World Cup battle was a cliffhanger
India batted first and posted 338 in Bengaluru. Sachin Tendulkar (120) led the charge. Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh scored impressive fifties, as Tim Bresnan (5/48) was excellent. In reply, Andrew Strauss (158) looked solid. Ian Bell (69) was on song. But their wickets in quick succession helped India. England weren't done though, but India held their nerves to pull off a tie (338/8).
2002 NatWest Trophy final was a landmark moment
Batting first, England rode on twin tons from Marcus Trescothick and Nasser Hussain to post 325/5 at Lord's in London. India needed to bat their skins out and do the unthinkable. Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag gave India the perfect start. However, from 106/0, India collapsed to 146/5. Youngsters Mohammad Kaif (87*) and Yuvraj Singh (69) got together and scripted a historic chase.
England win decider to clinch series in 2018
With the three-match ODI series tied at 1-1, both teams were eyeing a victory in the decider. Batting first, India posted a below-par 256/8. Skipper Virat Kohli (71) looked sharp, but Adil Rashid (3/49) bowled superbly. India needed wickets, but were denied by Joe Root (100*) and Eoin Morgan (88*). England won as India lost their first ODI series in more than 12 months.
India seal the deal at The Oval in 2007
In this seven-match series, England were leading 3-2. In the sixth ODI, India sealed a thriller. Riding on Owais Shah's 107 and a massive contribution from their number seven and eight batsmen, England scored 316/6. In reply, India's top order dictated the proceedings, but England hit back. Robin Uthappa (47*) took the game to the wire. India won with two balls to spare.
England stun India at the Kotla in 2002
The six-match series was eventually drawn 3-3, but it was the fifth ODI that helped England stay alive. At the Kotla, England posted 271/5 Nick Knight scoring 105. Indian pacers Ajit Agarkar and Javagal Srinath shared three scalps. India were 211/3 at one stage, but things changed thereafter. Ashley Giles (5/57) ran through India. Agarkar (36*) stayed on, but India lost by two runs.
