F1 2024: Decoding the key stats after 14 races
14 races have gone by in the 2024 Formula 1 season. There was drama at the Belgian Grand Prix held on July 28, Sunday. George Russell won the race but was disqualified two and a half hours later. Notably, Russell's car was found to be 1.5kg underweight. With the next F1 race matchday scheduled on August 25, we decode the updated stats this season.
Why does this story matter?
Russell finished above teammate Lewis Hamilton to win the 2024 Belgian GP. As per BBC, Russell's car was initially weighed at 798kg, which is exactly on the minimum weight limit for car and driver combined. However, stewards found the car had not been fully drained of fuel and when this happened, its weight was just 796.5kg, leading to him being disqualified.
Hamilton was adjudged the race winner
Mercedes ace Hamilton was adjudged the race winner as he claimed his 2nd race win this season and 105 overall following the British GP. Hamilton also secured his 201st podium. McLaren's Oscar Piastri moved to second with Scuderia Ferrari's Charles Leclerc moving to third and securing a podium. Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen finished fourth ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris.
Verstappen owns 7 race wins, nine podiums and 277 points
After 14 races in 2024, Verstappen leads the Driver Standings with 277 points. The Dutchman has won seven races this season with his last race win coming in Spain. Notably, Verstappen owns nine podium finishes. He finished second at the Miami and British GP. In eight races this season, Verstappen set the fastest lap. He retired at the Australian GP.
Other drivers with 150-plus points this season
2nd-placed Norris owns 199 points, having won one race and taking eight podium finishes. Ferrari's Leclerc is next with 177 points. He has six podiums and one race win. Piastri is next with 167 points (4 podiums, 1 race win). Ferrari's Carlos Sainz has 162 points (5 podiums) and is above sixth-placed Hamilton (150 points). Hamilton has won 2 races (4 podiums).
What about the Constructor Standings?
Red Bull Racing are at the top with 408 points. They earned four points more following Russell's disqualification in Belgium. McLaren, who are having a brilliant campaign, have raced to 366 points. Ferrari are 3rd with 345 points with Mercedes in fourth (266 points). Earlier, Mercedes had 284 points after the Belgian GP. No other teams own more than 75 points.
