BCCI website goes down for a day after domain expires

    What's the story

The BCCI is one of the richest sporting bodies in the world, but on Sunday they were left red-faced after they failed to renew the domain of its official website www.bcci.tv.

Website registrars, register.com and namejet.com had put the domain name up for public bidding and even received 7 bids, with the top bid being USD 270.

Here's more about this bizarre incident.

BCCI left embarrassed after website domain expires

The website, however, is working fine now after the BCCI resolved the issue.

The validity of the domain was from 2-2-2006 to 2-2-2019 and the domain had to be renewed by 3rd of February.

Hence, the website was not functional until Sunday evening and to make matters worse India were playing South Africa in the 2nd ODI at Centurion.

    Lalit Modi owns website domain

A report by Times of India claims that Lalit Modi is responsible for the website been dysfunctional.

The glitch occurred because the BCCI's website domain is still owned by former IPL czar, Lalit Modi who currently lives in exile away from the country.

Lalit Modi had failed to pay for the renewal in time.

The BCCI website domain is under Lalit Modi's control following a court order. There has been a legal dispute over it since 2014, when the BCCI filed a plea in the Bombay High Court to get the ownership transferred.

BCCI confirms Lalit Modi owns the domain

"Modi had bought the domain of the website (from website registrars register.com and namejet.com) in 2006, ownership is still in his name. He continued to own the domain even after being banned by the board and when he fled the country", a BCCI official said.
