BCCI mulls over two-bouncer, Impact Player rules for SMAT
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering reviewing the two-bouncer and Impact Player rules, as per Cricbuzz. These regulations were specifically designed for BCCI's domestic Twenty20 competition, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). The second bouncer rule was initially introduced in domestic cricket and later adopted by the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, its future now hangs in the balance as BCCI deliberates its continuation.
Uncertainty over the two-bouncer rule's continuation
The two-bouncer rule, which allows a second bouncer in an over, has been well-received by India's cricket community, particularly during the IPL. However, a review of this regulation is currently underway. An official from a state unit confirmed that no decision has been made yet regarding these key points. The outcome of this review will determine whether these rules will be retained for the upcoming SMAT and subsequent IPL season.
BCCI's delay in sharing SMAT playing conditions
The BCCI has not yet disclosed the playing conditions for the SMAT, despite promising to do so shortly. This delay has left state associations in the dark about whether these two rules will be retained. On August 5, BCCI shared documents related to guidelines and playing conditions for other domestic events of the season but did not include information on men's T20 playing conditions.
Impact player rule sparks debate among cricket community
The Impact Player rule has sparked a debate within the cricket community. While some figures like Zaheer Khan have voiced their support for it, others have expressed opposing views. Khan recently stated that he is all for the impact sub rule as it has provided opportunities to many uncapped Indian talents. However, India captain Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli have expressed concerns over this regulation.
No consensus among IPL teams on impact player rule
In a recent meeting between IPL team owners and BCCI officials, there was no agreement among the teams about the continuation of the Impact Player rule. The meeting also discussed other significant issues like the potential for a mega auction. Despite differing opinions, Khan insisted that this rule has been extremely beneficial for young Indian talents by providing them valuable opportunities in the tournament.
