BCCI to implement DRS in IPL 2018
The BCCI is set to implement the Decision Review System (DRS) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 season. According to a report in The Indian Express, the BCCI has finally decided to go ahead with the DRS in the marquee league after not using it for years. Around 10 Indian umpires were selected to get trained on the technology for IPL 11.
BCCI's tryst with DRS
The BCCI was always reluctant to use the DRS since its advent. The DRS was officially launched for the first time in a Test match in 2009. The board always cited that the technology wasn't ready, before using it against England in 2016 home series.
What the DRS has in store for India?
India have never used the DRS in domestic cricket and the IPL 2018 will be the first major experiment. A lot will depend on how much of success comes out using the technology in the cash-rich league, that could prompt the BCCI to implement it across all formats domestically. Since the 2016 series against England, the BCCI has used the technology in international assignments.
How does the DRS work in cricket?
On-field umpires can consult the third official after a player has reviewed a decision. Technology is used to determine sound, path of the ball after its pitching besides television replays in slow motion. Hawk-Eye, Snickometer, Hot Spot are some of the technologies used for review.
