    What's the story

The BCCI has awarded media rights for all bilateral cricket in the country during April'18-March'23 to Star India for Rs 6,138.10cr.

This includes both television and digital media rights.

So for Star, each match will cost Rs. 60.17cr.

Apart from it, Sony and Reliance were named the eligible parties for all three packages on offer.

Here's what happened in the e-auction.

    Information

In a first, BCCI decided to go transparent

The auction of media rights in the past was held behind closed doors but this time around, the BCCI followed a different route. Under the management of SC-appointed CoA, the BCCI conducted an e-auction to make the process transparent.

    Big parties

Major outlets that were in the race

While Facebook, Google, Reliance and Hotstar vouched for Internet rights, Star TV and Sony bid for television rights.

Only Sony, Star and Jio submitted technical bids.

It is believed Facebook, Google and YuppTV entered into consortiums with the primary bidders.

"Since Star has HotStar, they are unlikely to partner Facebook/Google. But Sony (might have) entered into a consortium with either," a BCCI official said.

    Auction

First-day's end-bid of Rs. 4,442cr 15% more than last auction

The three packages on offer were 1) Global Television Rights plus Rest-Of-World Digital Rights, 2) Indian Sub-continent Digital Rights and 3) Global Consolidated Rights.

The bidding took place over three days, starting Tuesday. On opening day, it stopped at Rs. 4,442cr, 15% more than Star TV's previous record bid of Rs. 3,851cr in 2012.

It closed at Rs. 6032.5cr on Day 2.

    Information

What exactly is Star India getting through the auction?

The winner, Star India, will now have broadcasting rights for a total of 102 matches that India will play at home in the next five years, that the BCCI has listed in the ICC's FTP - 22 Tests, 42 ODIs and 38 T20Is.
