BCCI allows WAGs to join on tour after first 10-days
As per a report by The Times of India, the BCCI has agreed to the request of Indian skipper, Virat Kohli, to allow the wives and girlfriends of members of the Indian cricket team on tours. However, the restriction is that they can join the cricketers only after 10 days into the tournament, but can stay for the remainder of the tour. Here's more.
Virat Kohli had first suggested the change in rules
Kohli had spoken about his desire to let wives and girlfriends of the cricketers to be allowed to stay for the whole duration of the tours. A BCCI official had then put forward his request to the SC-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA). Earlier, the cricketers' partners were allowed for only two weeks on tours, but Kohli has convinced the BCCI to relax the rules.
Reasons behind the change of rules
After a meeting between the CoA, skipper Virat Kohli, coach Ravi Shastri, and vice-captain Rohit Sharma, the CoA decided to bring about a change in the rules. What transpired from the meeting is that during long tours, the presence of close ones will help in creating a support system for the cricketers. Many countries have restrictions on family members accompanying the team during tours.
Limit on wives and girlfriends' time implemented by several nations
There has been a restriction on partners traveling with cricketers in world cricket in recent times. Many nations have restricted family time. In 2007, the England and Wales Cricket Board had asked an independent sports administrator to issue a report on the Ashes disaster. The report suggested limit on time of wives and girlfriends on tours. The report hadn't gone well with the players.
