BCB keen on roping in Bangar as Test batting consultant

What's the story

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) hopes to avail the services of Sanjay Bangar as the national team's batting consultant specifically for red-ball cricket.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, the board wants Bangar to join the side ahead of the upcoming Test series against Australia, scheduled to be held in June this year.

Here are further updates on the same.

Negotiations

McKenzie not keen, BCB in negotiations with Bangar and others

The BCB was hoping to convince Neil McKenzie, currently serving as a consultant for the white-ball teams, to extend his role to the longer format.

However, the former South Africa international is understood not to be keen on coaching all the formats on a regular basis.

The BCB is in negotiations with Bangar and several others for the job.

A look at Bangar's stint with Team India

Bangar worked with the Indian cricket team between 2014 and 2019.

He also served as the team's interim head coach on tours of Zimbabwe in 2016 and at West Indies in 2017.

Meanwhile, the former Indian cricketer didn't receive a contract extension despite Ravi Shastri's re-appointment as head coach after last year's World Cup.

He was replaced by Vikram Rathour.

We have spoken with Bangar, confirms Nizamuddin Chowdhury

"We have spoken with Bangar [for Test batting consultant] but nothing is finalized yet," BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury told reporters on Wednesday (March 18). "We are also negotiating with few others as well [for the Test batting consultant post]."

Short stint for Bangar on the cards

The report adds that according to BCB insiders, Bangar is expected to be contracted for 110 days from June 2020 till February 2021.

This is if both parties agree to work together.

It could be a good opportunity for someone like a Bangar to take up this challenge.

He could bring his insights and help the Bangladeshi batsmen do well in Test cricket.
