The Indian cricket team ended Day one of the fourth Test on top against hosts Australia. India finished at 303/4 at stumps and will be eyeing a mammoth first innings total. Cheteshwar Pujara slammed his third ton of the series to give India the cushion in Sydney. It was a long day for the Aussies. Here are the key things that defined today's play.
Indian batsmen chip in with the runs
India scored at a decent rate. Pujara (130*) and Hanuma Vihari (39*) are at the crease. Mayank Agarwal (77) needs to be praised for his efforts. India forged some key partnerships throughout the day. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood picked two scalps.
Pujara rules Day one's play in Sydney
Pujara struck his his third century of the series and his 18th Test career hundred as well. The classy batsman faced 250 deliveries and struck 16 fours. It was a typical Pujara innings and his vision in picking out the gaps was superb to watch. Pujara accelerated in the final session and made sure that he remained unbeaten. He almost batted the entire day.
India shine on through key partnerships
Pujara stitched a solid 116-run stand for the second wicket with Mayank Agarwal. That set the tone for the rest of the day. The experienced campaigner then added a crucial 54-run partnership with skipper Virat Kohli. India lost Kohli (23) and Ajinkya Rahane (18), but Pujara rallied on. He ended the day with a positive looking unbeaten 75-run stand with Vihari.
Kohli breaks Sachin's record
Kohli may have missed out on a big score today, but the 30-year-old became the fastest to notch 19,000 international runs across formats. Kohli achieved the feat in his 399th innings. He broke the record held by Sachin Tendulkar (432). He is the third Indian and the 12th overall cricketer to surpass 19,000 runs in international cricket.
Aussie bowlers not consistent enough
Australian bowlers made India work for the runs in the first session. But the quartet lost the productivity in the second and final sessions. The bowlers tried almost everything but lacked the consistency. Hazlewood stood out among the three pacers.
