The wicket-keeper has got the attention once again after challenging Rohit Sharma in the ongoing third Test against India at the MCG. Paine showed how one can take refuge in healthy banter. Paine went on to pull Rohit Sharma's leg from behind the stumps on Day two of the third Test. Paine challenged the Indian batsman to go for a big hit against spinner Nathan Lyon. Paine can be heard saying, "It's been a toss up for me between Royals and Indians, and if Rohit hits a six here, I am changing to Mumbai."

Paine grabbed headlines alongside his counterpart Virat Kohli post the second Test in Perth. The two had gone loggerheads at each other. Kohli had gone against Paine in the previous Test and said, "If he messes it up it's 2-0, and who's going to talk then?" Paine replied, "You've got to bat first, big head." The two had a few run-ins the next day.
